7 Things to Avoid on Cape Cod

As beautiful as Cape Cod is, there are some things you'll want to avoid like the plague on your vacation. There are some tourist traps, there are spots that experience way too much traffic, and there's the (dare I say it?) plain old boring. Here are ten places on Cape Cod to avoid. 1. Route 28, between Hyannis and Dennis. During most of the year, this is a great spot to visit...but during the summer, it turns into sheer pandemonium. Traffic, motels, and mini golf aren't what the Cape is all about. 2. The Bridges. Yes, get by these as soon as possible and don't look back if there's traffic! While the canal itself is plenty of fun, the frequent summer traffic isn't. 3. Provincetown with kids. Some of the sex boutiques are very raunchy and provocative, not something kids should see. Adults though, go ahead, the town center has a lot of fun things. 4. The Outer Cape Eastern Beaches with kids. The surf is far too rough, and the cliffs are too steep. The pounding waves are anything but gentle, but they are perfect for surfers. 5. Hyannis. There's nowhere on the Cape that's the bigger antithesis of what Cape Cod is all about like Hyannis. If malls, big hotels, chain restaurants, traffic, and tourists that have no idea where they are going are your thing, then by all means, visit Hyannis. Hyannis does have its interesting places and shops, but for the most part, stay far away. 6. Weekend trips. Most people tend to visit Cape Cod for the week, but many stay for just the weekend. If you're looking for some peace and quiet, this is the worst time to go! Try Monday-Thursday on non-holiday weeks for real rest and relaxation. 7. Inland Cape Cod hotels. There are some exceptions to the rule, but why go to the Cape to stay far away from the beach? You'll want to be as close as possible, unless you're headed just for the shopping and nothing else. Shell out the few extra bucks and rent a place that's closer to the beach for the views and convenience. You'll have a much better trip!
