Planning a Summer Trip to Cape Cod
By Bill Torrey
Cape Cod is one of the most popular places on the East Coast of the United States visit and to plan a vacation. With its pristine beaches, beautiful salt marshes, and quaint, historic feel, it's a popular destination for families, couples, and tourists of all kinds. The summer is one of the best times of years to experience the Cape, and the water is just warming up enough for you to dip your feet in. With the help of this page, you can plan a trip to one of America's best beach destinations! Before the Trip Before you start any planning for your summer Cape Cod trip, you're going to want to think of a few things first. Different parts of Cape Cod are best suited for different types of people. For families with younger children, the gentle, calm waves of Cape Cod Bay might be best suited for you. For younger couples, the romantic scenery of the Outer Cape's eastern facing Atlantic beaches provide the ultimate retreat in towns like Wellfleet, Truro, and Eastham. Where to Stay When you've decided on where you'd like to go, now you should focus on which hotel, motel, inn or campsite you might like to stay at. There are also many homes that you can rent weekly during the summer on Cape Cod. While a bed and breakfast or a home rental might be the most expensive option, these are often the most fun. If you won't be in your hotel very long, then renting a cheaper motel or inn might be a better idea. Sites like Trip Advisor have detailed ratings on just about every hotel, motel and inn on Cape Cod. During the summer, you won't find many hotels offering any sort of package deal, discount, or budget-friendly prices. On the Cape, rooms are hard to come by, and because of the demand, they don't have to offer any sort of discount. Instead, try to shave costs off of your food costs. Food on Cape Cod can be very expensive, so getting a room with a refrigerator can pay itself off in no time. The Beaches of Cape Cod The beaches of Cape Cod are plentiful, but many of them are private. Many you also have to pay to park at the beach, and they only accept cash (so make sure you have plenty of cash with you!). Some of the most popular Cape Cod beaches are Marconi Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Sandy Neck Beach, Nauset Light Beach, Monument Beach, and Race Point Beach. Generally the beaches on Cape Cod Bay have great sunsets and cooler temperatures, while the south facing Nantucket Sound beaches have warmer ocean temperatures. Beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean from Orleans to Provincetown has unbelievable sunrises, and big ocean swells. Avoiding Traffic Traffic on Cape Cod can be miserable in the summer. If you're headed there for the week, try going in the middle of the week and leaving in the middle of the week to avoid the crowds. Keep in mind that many places are closed on Mondays, even in the summer. To avoid traffic, pass over the Sagamore and Bourne bridges either late at night or early in the morning. Traffic backups can go for miles along Route 3 and Route 25. On the Cape itself, watch out for backups near the Orleans Rotary, Route 28 in Falmouth, the bottleneck on Route 6 where it becomes two lanes, and the Outer Cape, where side traffic can hold up traffic for a long time. Oh, and there's no such thing as the Cape Cod Bridge Tunnel, so don't bother looking for it (though they sell stickers in many tourist shops to perpetuate the myth). What to Eat Eat local, and eat early. Restaurants close early on Cape Cod, so don't plan on eating out very late. The smaller the town, the earlier the restaurants close. Avoid the chain restaurants to get the true flavor of Cape Cod, and as a general rule of thumb, avoid restaurants with tacky ornamentation to attract people in. When in doubt, head to Yelp for reviews, or Google the name of the restaurant. Cape Cod is known for its oysters, lobster, and other seafood, so be sure to give it a try. What You Should Definitely See Check out Provincetown for great beaches and scenic views, Eastham for historic lighthouses, Brewster for the Colonial homes and antique shops, Sandwich for its Sandwich Glass Museum, Dennis for its Cape Cod Rail trail, (converted from railway to bike path), and Bourne for the recreational Cape Cod Canal.
