Tricks and Tools to Save Time on Ebay

By Bill Torrey

Selling on Ebay can eat up quite a bit of your time, unless you use templates, systems, establish routines, and implement a few time saving strategies. Here are some things that will help you save time with your Ebay business, even if you're just selling from time to time.

Ebay Templates
These will help form an outline of what you’re auction will look like. You can select from different auction templates when you go to list an item, or just use the “sell similar” link when logged into your Ebay account. You can also buy auction templates (or download a free one) that make the appearance of your auction more customized.

Establishing a Routine
Once you get “into the mode” you’ll work a lot faster, and you won’t be on the computer as long. Once Ebay has become part of your life, you’ll have a system where certain days you can work and list new items, while other days you’ll just answer questions (or maybe find new inventory).
Buy More than One Item at a Time – If you can purchase more than one quantity of an item, this will save you a lot of time, and make you a lot more money. Simply use the “sell similar” option to list multiple quantities, or use the fixed price format and list multiple quantities of the item.

Print PayPal Packing Slips – By printing out a packing slip, you can keep orders more organized come shipping time. This is a must when the holiday season comes around and you have dozens of packages on your packing table.

Stock Up on Boxes, Packing Tape, Envelopes, and other Packaging – Order far in advance when you notice your inventory dwindling on boxes, tape and other supplies, so you’ll never have to run out to the store to grab them. Not only is it more convenient to order these online, but they’re a better deal as well. You can review this full list of Ebay supplies here.

Make a Schedule
Pick certain days and hours that you want to work on Ebay, and stick to them. By treating it like a job, you’ll get more done, make more money, and be done with the job quicker. Don’t treat Ebay like a hobby, treat it like a serious side income.

Set Up an FAQ
Setting up a good FAQ section to add to your auctions can cut down on your question answering time drastically. Your customers will appreciate it, too, since they won’t have to wait for you to answer their questions.

Disclose Shipping Costs to International Buyers
One of the most popular questions you’ll receive is “how much is shipping to Canada?” Give them the answers they’re looking for right in your auction.

Block Bidders That Aren’t Serious
Some bidders aren't serious at all, but they are serious about wasting your time and money. You have the option to block certain bidders from being able to bid on your auctions. It’s a good idea to block bidders that have a -1 feedback or less, and you can also block buyers that are causing problems for you. Add non-paying bidders to your own personal blocked bidders list (which can be found in your Ebay account).

Use Auction Tools to Manage Listings
Turbo Lister, Vendio, Auctiva, and other tools are available to help Ebay sellers list quicker and organize their auctions. Some of these are available at a low cost to you, while others are completely free like Turbo Lister.
Take Accurate Measurements the First Time – One of the other most common questions will be about the dimensions of the product. Give accurate, detailed measurements on everything you possibly can in your item. Sometimes your buyers might be curious but won’t ask!

Take Plenty of Photos the First Time
The more photos you take, the better the auction will look, and the less chance you’ll have to go back and reshoot for more photos. Become a photo pro and take lots of good photos the first time with this Ebay photography guide.

Keep Tracking Information Handy
You’ll need to purchase delivery confirmation for every single item you ship on Ebay. Confirmation will not cover you in case the item is lost, however it will confirm if the item is delivered should the buyer file a claim with PayPal that the item was not received. Buy insurance on items of high worth to cover yourself (the buyer pays for this, not you).

Use Click N’ Ship Carrier Pickup
Doesn’t it sound almost too easy to have the mailman come to pick your items up at your home? Click N’ Ship is a USPS program, and all that you need is the software downloaded onto your computer, along with an official scale to accurately weigh the items. A good investment which will pay off (think of the cost of gas and your time!).

UPS Online
You can also package your items and print shipping labels at home with UPS. Drop the package off at a local UPS store, or schedule a pickup with a driver.

Learn to Buy Products on Ebay to Resell on Ebay – Once you’ve sold in one certain niche on Ebay, you’ll be able to spot deals other sellers (usually newbies) might be offering. This a great source of inventory, and where some of the best deals of all can be found.

Sell Similar Products
Selling in the same niche is not only good for business, it’s good for you because it will be much easier to list products for sale that you’re already familiar with.
