Where to Find Items to Sell on Ebay

By Bill Torrey

If you're thinking of starting an Ebay business, you might be wondering where sellers get their inventory. There are a number of ways that they find things to sell on Ebay, from the conventional to extraordinary places you may have never thought of.

When you're looking for inventory, the best strategy to take is the one less followed. Plenty of people take the easy road and try to find wholesalers, liquidators, and department stores, but these are often the least profitable. Why? There's a number of reasons.

These options, like department stores and wholesalers, have thousands of other sellers who are looking for the same items as you. Ebay is a very competitive marketplace, and sellers sometimes think alike. This means the price on inventory that you purchase through these outlets will go down, as demand goes down and sellers try to undercut your price. In the end, everyone loses, and you wind up making a minimal profit. Worse yet, you could wind up making no profit as the item's value plunges down even further. The point is, be careful buying your inventory from a place that everyone else is looking.

So where should you look for Ebay inventory? The road less traveled will bring you greater profits. That means unique. The more unique the item, the less you have to worry about competition. Here are a few places that bring in top dollar items and big profits for Ebay sellers:

Yard Sales.
Some people really have a knack for finding great deals and unique items at Yard Sales. It doesn't come naturally. Knowing about a specific genre, like antiques or collectible Star Wars figurines, will greatly improve the odds of you making a profit and finding high worth items (for a deal). My best tip is to shop early at Yard Sales, when the deals are still there.

Outlets.
Outlet malls are a huge place to find bargain deals, but you need to know what you're looking for, and the store has to be flexible. Some stores don't allow bulk purchases, in fear that the items will be sold on Ebay. Some are delighted that their items are just moving off the shelves. It's best not to tip your hat if you're an Ebay seller, though they just might figure it out after time. Outlets aren't something you should entirely rely on for your inventory, but they can be a nice supplement from time to time. Studying individual brands and knowing them inside and out will help you find better deals and move more of the product.

Artist, Crafters, and Painters.
You simply can't get any better than owning a niche so well that you're the only seller selling a specific item. Artists are a great way to tap into that market. Offer a number of artists work for sale, work with a small group, or work in a specific genre of artwork and consistently offer high quality originals, and you'll soon be known as a trusted seller of great fine art.
